• Description: Human transmembrane protein 173 (TMEM173) gene encodes the STING protein (Stimulator of Interferon Genes, also known as TMEM173, HMITA, NET23, ERIS, MPYS, MITA, SAVI). STING is a major regulator of the innate immune response to viral and bacterial infections and promotes the production of type I interferon (IFN-alpha and IFN-beta). The initial identified human STING has a histidine at amino acid 232 (H232 variant). The most common TMEM173 allele in the human population has an arginine at amino acid 232 (R232).
