• Description: Membrane-Bound Transcription Factor Site-1 Protease (MBTPS1) is a member of the peptidase S8 family. MBTPS1 cleaves the endoplasmic reticulum loop of sterol regulatory element binding protein (SREBP) transcription factors. MBTPS1 catalyzes the first step in the proteolytic activation of the sterol regulatory element-binding proteins, but not by nickel or cobalt. MBTPS1 is inhibited by divalent copper and zinc ions and by its prosegment. MBTPS1 has a central role in the regulation of lipid metabolism in cells.
