• Product Overview: Haptoglobin is a serum protein that consists of two alpha and two beta chains connected by disulfide bridges. The alpha and beta chains of rabbit haptoglobin are characterized by polypeptide molecular weights of 9.5 kDa and 27.3 kDa respectively. It acts as a hemoglobin scavenger and has been associated with protease inhibitory activity. It is a positive acute phase reactant, the levels of which increase significantly in rabbits in response to inflammation, tissue injury or disease. Haptoglobin is purified using a combination of affinity and gel filtration chromatography steps.

• Description: As a result of hemolysis, hemoglobin is found to accumulate in the kidney and is secreted in the urine. Haptoglobin captures, and combines with free plasma hemoglobin to allow hepatic recycling of heme iron and to prevent kidney damage. Haptoglobin also acts as an antioxidant, has antibacterial activity and plays a role in modulating many aspects of the acute phase response. Hemoglobin/haptoglobin complexes are rapidly cleared by the macrophage CD163 scavenger receptor expressed on the surface of liver Kupfer cells through an endocytic lysosomal degradation pathway.
