Description : | Chylomicron remnantsand Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) remnants are rapidly removed from thecirculation by receptor-mediated endocytosis in the liver. Apolipoprotein E(APOE), a main apoprotein of the chylomicron, binds to a specific receptor onliver cells and peripheral cells. APOE serves as a ligand for low densityreceptors and participates in the transport and redistribution of cholesteroland other lipids. Other functions include immunoregulation and cell growthmodulation and differentiation. APOE is thought to be involved in tissuerepair as increased amounts of the protein are found at sites of peripheralnerve injury and regeneration. APOE is essential for the normal catabolism oftriglyceride-rich lipoprotein constituents. |
