Description : | This geneencodes a subunit of the asialoglycoprotein receptor. This receptor is atransmembrane protein that plays a critical role in serum glycoproteinhomeostasis by mediating the endocytosis and lysosomal degradation ofglycoproteins with exposed terminal galactose or N-acetylgalactosamineresidues. The asialoglycoprotein receptor may facilitate hepatic infection bymultiple viruses including hepatitis B, and is also a target forliver-specific drug delivery. The asialoglycoprotein receptor is ahetero-oligomeric protein composed of major and minor subunits, which areencoded by different genes. The protein encoded by this gene is the moreabundant major subunit. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encodingmultiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. |
