In human neutrophils proteinase 3 contributes to the proteolytic generation of antimicrobial peptides. PR3 is also the epitope of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) of the cANCA (cytoplasmic subtype) class, as the major autoantigen of c-ANCA and is strongly expressed in lung tissue of patients with Wegener"s granulomatosis.
