• Description: Epidermal growth factor (EGF) is a family of growth factors derived from a family of membrane-anchored precursor proteins whose extracellular region contains at least one 3-pair disulfide-bonded structural domain (EGF structural unit) composed of six conserved Cys. EGF has the ability to promote the proliferation and differentiation of mesenchymal and epithelial cells. In vitro, EGF is a mitogen for fibroblasts, epithelial cells and endothelial cells, and promotes colony formation in epithelial cell cultures. In vivo, EGF promotes the formation of epithelial cells and blood vessels and inhibits gastric acid secretion.
