Description : | This gene, a member of the SNAP25 gene family, encodes a protein involved in multiple membrane trafficking steps. Two other members of this gene family, SNAP23 and SNAP25, encode proteins that bind a syntaxin protein and mediate synaptic vesicle membrane docking and fusion to the plasma membrane. The protein encoded by this gene binds tightly to multiple syntaxins and is localized to intracellular membrane structures rather than to the plasma membrane. While the protein is mostly membrane-bound, a significant fraction of it is found free in the cytoplasm. Use of multiple polyadenylation sites has been noted for this gene. |

Q&As (5)
Ask a questionDiagnostic methods include genetic testing to identify mutations in the SNAP29 gene, as well as clinical examinations and imaging studies to assess the manifestation of associated symptoms.
SNAP29 is involved in the assembly of SNARE complexes, which mediate the fusion of transport vesicles with their target membranes, facilitating the trafficking of proteins and lipids within cells.
Given its role in membrane fusion and intracellular trafficking, SNAP29 is being explored as a potential therapeutic target for other neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by similar cellular defects.
Yes, research is underway to explore the potential of targeting SNAP29 for the development of new therapeutic interventions for CEDNIK syndrome and related disorders.
SNAP29 interacts with other SNARE proteins, as well as regulatory proteins and lipids, to orchestrate the fusion of vesicles with target membranes in a regulated and coordinated manner.
