Description : Growth factor involved in bone and cartilage formation. During cartilage development regulates differentiation of chondrogenic tissue through two pathways. Firstly, positively regulates differentiation of chondrogenic tissue through its binding of high affinity with BMPR1B and of less affinity with BMPR1A, leading to induction of SMAD1-SMAD5-SMAD8 complex phosphorylation and then SMAD protein signaling transduction. Secondly, negatively regulates chondrogenic differentiation through its interaction with NOG. Required to prevent excessive muscle loss upon denervation. This function requires SMAD4 and is mediated by phosphorylated SMAD1/5/8. Binds bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and mediates LPS-induced inflammatory response, including TNF secretion by monocytes.

        Q&As (5)

        Ask a question
How does GDF5 contribute to cartilage repair? 10/10/2022

GDF5 has been found to stimulate the proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes, the cells responsible for cartilage formation and maintenance.

What preclinical evidence supports the use of GDF5 in orthopedics? 01/16/2021

Preclinical studies have demonstrated GDF5's ability to promote bone and cartilage regeneration in animal models, providing a foundation for further clinical exploration.

How does GDF5 differ from other growth factors in terms of clinical applications? 10/01/2017

GDF5's specificity for bone and cartilage development distinguishes it from other growth factors, making it a targeted option for orthopedic interventions.

Can GDF5 be used in combination with other therapies for enhanced effects? 09/06/2017

Some studies suggest that combining GDF5 with other growth factors or therapeutic approaches may result in synergistic effects, improving overall outcomes.

Is GDF5 only relevant for bone and cartilage conditions, or are there other potential applications? 08/18/2017

While its primary focus is on musculoskeletal conditions, GDF5's role in cellular differentiation opens avenues for exploring its applications in broader regenerative medicine contexts.
