Description : FIGF, a member ofthe VEGF/PDGF family of structurally related proteins, is a potent antigeniccytokine. It promotes endothelial cell growth, promotes lymphangiogesis, andcan also affect vascular permeability. FIGF is highly expressed in the lung, heart, small intestine and fetal lung, and at lower levels in the skeletalmuscle, colon, and pancreas. During embryogenesis, FIGF may play a role inthe formation of the venous and lymphatic vascular systems. It alsoparticipates in the growth and maintenance of differentiated lymphatic endotheliumin adults. Both VEGFC and FIGF are over-expressed in certain cancers, and theresulting elevated levels of VEGFC or FIGF tend to correlate with increasedlymphatic metastasis.
