The polyprotein is processed by host cell and viral proteases into three major structural proteins including NS3, and several non-structural proteins necessary for viral replication. Nonstructural (NS) proteins of HCV play major roles in viral replication and the pathogenesis of liver diseases. The NS3 protein of hepatitis C virus (HCV) contains protease and RNA helicase activities, both of which are likely to be essential for HCV propagation.
