Background : The CD57 antigen, also known as HNK-1 or Leu-7, is an oligosaccharide antigenic moiety bound to surface proteins of certain cell types. CD57 is present on 15–20% of PBMCs, including subsets of NK cells and T cells and some neural cell types.
CD57 has been shown to be expressed on late-stage CD8+ effector cells3 and terminally differentiated NK cells.
The frequency of CD57+ T lymphocytes is raised in a variety of diseases, for example, in rheumatoid arthritis. Its expression is also increased on proliferation-incompentent or chronically activated CD8+ T cells in persistent viral infections, such as HIV.
