Erythropoietin production can be stimulated by hypoxia, and recombinant human erythropoietin has long been used clinically for the treatment of anemia in combination with renal insufficiency, anemia caused by acquired immunodeficiency syndrome/AIDS itself or treatment, anemia associated with malignant tumors, and anemia in rheumatic diseases.
