• Enzyme Unit: Each ampoule of the reference standard contains 138 International Units (IU). (This value is equivalent to 23μg calcitonin per ampoule).
• Usage: For practical purposes each ampoule contains the same quantity of calcitonin. The entire contents of each ampoule should be completely dissolved in an accurately measured amount of suitable diluent, with carrier protein where extensive dilution is required. No attempt should be made to weigh out any portion of the freeze-dried powder. The material has not been sterilized and the ampoules contain no bacteriostat. Unopened ampoules should be stored at –20 °C in the dark.
• Notes: This preparation is not for administration to humans. The material is not of human or bovine origin. As with all materials of biological origin, this preparation should be regarded as potentially hazardous to health. It should be used and discarded according to your own laboratorys safety procedures. Such safety procedures should include the wearing of protective gloves and avoiding the generation of aerosols. Care should be exercised in opening ampoules or vials, to avoid cuts.
• Stability: Ampoule of the Salmon Calcitonin reference standard stored at elevated temperatures for 8 months showed little evidence of any significant loss of activity by bioassay and only a modest increase in degradation products by HPLC. The results indicate that it is sufficiently stable to serve as a standard. They remain valid with the assigned potency and status until withdrawn or amended. Reference materials are held at Creative Biomart within assured, temperature- controlled storage facilities. Reference Materials should be stored on receipt as indicated on the label. In addition, once reconstituted, diluted or aliquoted, users should determine the stability of the material according to their own method of preparation, storage and use. • Storage: Unopened ampoules should be stored at –20°C. Please note: because of the inherent stability of lyophilized material, Creative Biomart may ship these materials at ambient temperature.
