• Description: IL6 mediates itsbiological effects through the type I IL6 receptor system that consists oftwo chains, IL6R and gp130. The IL6R chain is the binding component specificto IL6; while the gp130 only transmits signals of IL6 when bound to IL6R. Thegp130 also can transmit signals from LIF, OSM, CNTF, IL11 and CT-1 inconjunction with other receptor subunits. The low-affinity binding site forIL6 is composed of IL6R alone. IL6R is expressed in a wide range of cellsincluding T cells, fibroblasts and macrophages. Soluble IL6R which consistsof only the extracellular domain of the IL6R chain, acts as an agonist of IL6activity at low concentrations.
