• Description: Ephrin­A2, also knownas ELF­1, Cek7­L and LERK­6, is a member of the Ephrin ligand family which bindsmembers of the Eph receptor family. All ligands share a conserved extracellularsequence, which most likely corresponds to the receptor binding domain. This conservedsequence consists of approximately 125 amino acids (aa) and includes four invariantcysteines. The A­class ligands have a GPI anchor following the conserved sequence.Ephrin­A2 has been shown to bind EphA2, EphA3, EphA4, EphA5, EphA6, EphA7, andEphA8. The extracellular domains of human and mouse Ephrin­A2 share 93% aa identity.Only membrane­bound or Fc­clustered ligands are capable of activating the receptorin vitro. While soluble monomeric ligands bind the receptor they do not inducereceptor autophosphorylation and activation. In vivo, the ligands and receptorsdisplay reciprocal expression.It has been found that nearly all receptors andligands are expressed in developing and adult neural tissue. The Eph/Ephrin familiesalso appear to play a role in angiogenesis.
