• Description: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent growth and angiogenic cytokine. It is a member of the PDGF family that is characterized by the presence of eight conserved cysteine residues and a cystine knot structure VEGF stimulates angiogenesis, vasculogenesis and endothelial cell growth, induces endothelial cell proliferation, promotes cell migration, inhibits apoptosis and induces permeabilization of blood vessels. Human express alternately spliced isoforms, and VEGF-121 is the only form that lacks a basic heparin binding region and is freely diffusible.
• Bio-activity: The activity was measured by its ability to stimulate the proliferation of HUVEC cells (Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells).
