LEFTY1

  • Official Full Name

    left-right determination factor 1
  • Overview

This gene encodes a member of the TGF-beta family of proteins. A similar secreted protein in mouse plays a role in left-right asymmetry determination of organ systems during development. Alternative processing of this protein can yield three different products. This gene is closely linked to both a related family member and a related pseudogene. [provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]

    Background

    What is lefty1 protein?

Lefty1 protein is a member of the transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) superfamily, specifically belonging to the nodal-related subfamily. It is encoded by the LEFTY1 gene in humans. Lefty1 is involved in embryonic development and plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining embryo patterning and left-right asymmetry.

Lefty1 acts as an antagonist of Nodal, a TGF-β superfamily ligand, by binding to its receptors and inhibiting its signaling pathway. This has the effect of inhibiting the expression of Nodal target genes, which are crucial for specifying the left side of the embryo during development.

What is the function of lefty1 protein?

Lefty1 functions in establishing the anterior-posterior axis and is involved in regulating cell differentiation and proliferation. It is expressed in various tissues during early embryogenesis, including the anterior visceral endoderm, node, and left lateral plate mesoderm.

Lefty1 mutations or dysregulation have been associated with several developmental abnormalities, including congenital heart defects, situs inversus, and defects in left-right asymmetry establishment.

    Lefty1 related signaling pathway

Stem cell biology: Lefty1 is involved in the regulation of pluripotency and self-renewal in embryonic stem cells. Studying its signaling mechanisms can provide insights into stem cell biology and potentially aid in the development of improved protocols for the generation and differentiation of stem cells for regenerative medicine.

Cancer therapy: Understanding the role of Lefty1 in tumor biology may have implications for the development of novel cancer therapies. Targeting the Lefty1 pathway could potentially help counteract the pro-tumorigenic effects of Nodal signaling in certain cancer types.

Tissue regeneration: Manipulating the activity of Lefty1 signaling may have implications for tissue regeneration and repair. By modulating the pathway, it may be possible to promote tissue-specific differentiation and regeneration in various organs and tissues.

    Lefty1 Related Diseases

    •  Pregnancy-related complications: Lefty1 is involved in the regulation of embryonic development and implantation. Abnormal expression of Lefty1 has been associated with pregnancy-related complications such as recurrent miscarriage and preeclampsia.
    •  Cardiovascular diseases: Lefty1 has been implicated in cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and myocardial infarction. It plays a role in regulating cardiac development and function, and dysregulation of Lefty1 expression may contribute to cardiac dysfunction.
    •  Wound healing and tissue regeneration: Lefty1 has been found to play a role in tissue repair and regeneration processes. It may have potential applications in promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration in various medical conditions, such as skin ulcers and tissue injuries.

    Biomedical Application of lefty1 Protein

    •  Wound healing and tissue regeneration: Lefty1 has been found to play a role in tissue repair and regeneration processes. It may have potential applications in promoting wound healing and tissue regeneration in various medical conditions, such as skin ulcers and tissue injuries.
    •  Immune modulation: Lefty1 has been shown to regulate immune responses and inflammatory processes. It may have therapeutic potential in immune-related disorders, such as autoimmune diseases, where balancing immune responses is crucial for disease management.
