Overview
CREB (cAMP response element-binding) is a cellular transcription factor. It binds to certain DNA sequences called cAMP response elements (CRE), thereby increasing or decreasing the transcription of the downstream genes. CREB was first described in 1987 as a cAMP-responsive transcription factor regulating the somatostatin gene. -

Protein Function
CREB1 has several biochemical functions, for example, RNA polymerase II activating transcription factor binding,RNA polymerase II core promoter proximal region sequence-specific DNA binding,RNA polymerase II distal enhancer sequence-specific DNA binding. Some of the functions are cooperated with other proteins, some of the functions could acted by CREB1 itself.
