Background:	PRMT5 (UniProt/Swiss-Prot entry O14744) is an arginine methyltransferase that can both catalyze the monomethylation andsymmetrical dimethylation of arginine residues with a preference for the formation of monomethylarginine, in a variety ofproteins including SNRPD1, SNRPD3, SUPT5H, MBP, PIWIL1, PIWIL2, PIWIL4, HOXA9, SRGAP2 and histone H2A, H4 and H3.Histone H2A and H4 are methylated at R3 during germ cell development, whereas histone H3 is methylated at R8, probablyleading to transcriptional repression.
