| Background: | Covalent binding of ubiquitin to other proteins is one of the most frequent posttranslational modifiations. This covalent attachmentcan be either as a monomer (monoubiquitin), a polymer linked via different Lys residues of the ubiquitin (polyubiquitin chains)or a linear polymer linked via the initiator Met of the ubiquitin (linear polyubiquitin chains). Conjugation of ubiquitin to itstarget protein can lead to various effects within a cell, including protein degradation, DNA repair, cell cycle regulation, kinasemodification, endocytosis, and regulation of other cell signaling pathways. |
