P300 is an important regulator of cell function and serves to integrate a number of key cell signaling pathways. P300 contains intrinsic histone acetylatransferase (HAT) activity and serves as a co-activator for a large number of transcription factors. The bromodomain of P300 specifically recognizes a number of acetylated proteins, including histones and transcription factors. The P300 gene is mutated in Rubinestein-Taybi Syndrome, a rare developmental disorder. |
