| Description: | SUV420H1 and SUV420H2 are SET domain containing methyltransferases responsible for di- and trimethylation of histone H4 lysine 20 (H4K20me2 and H4K20me3) at pericentric heterochromatin. Monomethylation of histone H4K20 is specifically catalyzed by KMT5a in higher eukaryotes. H4K20 dimethylation is believed to be required for proper DNA damage response through recruitment of 53BP1. Trimethylation of H4K20 leads to a repressive chromatin state corresponding to a suppression of position-effect variegation (PEV) at constitutive heterochromatin. |
