Nitrate nitrogen refers to nitrogen present in nitrate form and is a major nitrogen source absorbed by higher plants. Its concentration directly affects crop yield and quality.
Under concentrated acidic conditions, nitrate reacts with salicylic acid to form nitrosalicylic acid, which appears yellow under alkaline conditions (pH > 12). Color intensity is proportional to nitrate nitrogen content.
