Significance of Measurement: Potassium plays a vital role in maintaining osmotic pressure, acid–base balance, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, and normal neuromuscular function. Abnormal serum potassium levels can lead to severe cardiac and neuromuscular disorders. Therefore, serum potassium is a commonly used biochemical indicator.
Principle of Measurement: Potassium ions react with sodium tetraphenylborate to form insoluble potassium tetraphenylborate. The resulting turbidity is proportional to potassium concentration within a defined range and is measured spectrophotometrically.
